My main research interest is marine symbiosis. In particular, I am interested in symbioses between algae and invertebrates (e.g., sea anemones, corals, and sponges). My research has concentrated on four aspects of algal-invertebrate symbiosis: 1. Nutritional interactions between hosts and their symbionts, and how these interactions are regulated 2. Host-symbiont recognition and the specificity of symbiotic relationships 3. The comparative biology of temperate versus tropical symbioses 4. Coral bleaching and disease – particularly the potential role of viral pathogens in reef health.
