Existing dying technologies to produce high visibility wool for use in safety and protective clothing uses a very expensive dye material that does not produce the desired colouration. However wool due to its flame retardant and heat retention characteristics is an attractive fabric for safety and protective clothing. By chemically modifying the wool polymer during processing it is now possible to dye wool with a fluorescent basic dye. Note that wool is usually unable to be dyed with basic dyes. The process can be used in a normal processing system and produces.
AgResearch is looking for a wool/textile processor to further develop the technology to a commercial process for application in the textile industry.
