The process involves a number of proprietary steps that take soft wood material through to both a fermentable sugar product and a high quality lignin by-product. These steps include a thermo-chemical pre-treatment, enzymatic treatment and subsequent separation. The sugar syrup has been shown to be suitable for use in fermentation for a range of products such as ethanol, bioputanol or PHA.

Scion is looking for potential partners or investors to take this technology forward.

Unique Selling Propositions
  • The process uses aspects of existing wood processing technologies and infrastructure.
  • Maintains the integrity of the lignin through the process and delivers it as a usable by product
  • Able to be used as a front end to existing ethanol plants
  • Process is able to use recalcitrant lignocellulosic starting materials such as softwoods.
  • Technology package provides a complete solution from wood through to ethanol if required.
  • Production of sugar syrups and lignins from softwood sources
IP Strategy

Currently protected as trade secrets but aspects of the overall process are believed to be novel and patentable.
