Neospora caninum, a protozoan parasite, is a major cause of disease in dogs and one of the most common causes of abortions in cattle worldwide. There is only one vaccine in the market for NeoSpora (Bovillis NeoGuard, InterVet/Schering-Plough) a killed whole protozoa vaccine with low efficacy (~50%) in cattle. Novel peptides have been identified that bind to NeoSpora tachyzoites that with further development could lead to the identification of targets to develop a efficacious vaccine/drug against Neospora.
