Sponge Bio-Polymer

Sponge Bio-Polymer

It has been found that the extracts of some marine sponges have biopolymer properties. It has also been identified that different sponges can produce different biopolymers and that post extraction the extracts can be formed into a range of different biopolymers by differing the post treatment processes.

NIWA is looking for an investor and/or development partner to further investigate this technology. This opportunity would suit a partner with expertise in biomaterials and polymer science.

Unique Selling Propositions
  • As well as being able to readily modify the biopolymer properties in the preparation step these materials remain flexible over a wide range of temperatures and pressures.
  • In the biomedical area as a cartilage replacement or in a range of surface coatings, the range of potential applications has not as yet been fully explored.
